Doyle Brunson, who has been the winner of the ‘World Series of Poker’ tag for ten years in a row, revealed on Twitter that he would have to undergo another serious surgery soon. This will be the 12th important surgery for the legend in his life. This time he would be undergoing a removal surgery for his melanoma growth.
Battling it out once again
Brunson said that his third melanoma has been confirmed. It is still in the initial stages and this should be an uncomplicated operation. The growth is on his head. Before this he has had two surgeries for handling melanoma. However given the fact that Brunson is now 81 years old, it is definitely a major operation which requires lady luck to be in his favour.
In the year 2012, Brunson had a diagnosis of Squamous cell carcinoma, a skin cancer that involves gradual growth, which is generally okay. But this was hardly scary as compared to the one he experienced in 1963. This happened a year post his marriage to Louise and she was pregnant with his baby at that time. Brunson had found a sort of knot in the neck region and the doctors quickly diagnosed it as cancer.
Brunson defies odds
When his neck was opened, the doctors revealed a melanoma which originated from a mole that was removed by them one year ago, wrote Brunson in ‘The Godfather of Poker’, his autobiography.
Initially, there was no response of the melanoma to chemotherapy or radiation. Finally a unanimous decision was taken that there was no possible solution and Louise was told that till then nobody with such a condition survived more than 3 months.
However, Brunson’s life has been all about fighting the odds and so he did when he took a second opinion from doctors at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. Doctors went on to operate on him and found that his cancer had magically disappeared.
