In an unprecedented event, the sequel to the wildly successful Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will be released simultaneously on Netflix and IMAX theaters. While Netflix has been developing original television series for a few years, the venture into an original movie is something that audiences did not expect. Crouching Tiger is set to release in the 28th of August 2015. The movie will be available at 12:01 AM of that date on Netflix, along with plenty of midnight IMAX screenings throughout the United States.
The chief content officer of Netflix was delighted that they had found an agreement with IMAX for this special release. He had this to say on the matter: “It is an honor to work with Harry Weinstein and his exceptional team of writers, actors and technical people. This is going to be an epic adventure. Everyone saw how successful Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was, and there is no reason why the sequel cannot be a similar hit.”
The movie is being titled “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend”. News agencies have reported that actress Michelle Yeoh has signed on to play the role of Yu Shu Lien, with actor Donnie Yen set to play Silent Wolf. The last movie’s director, Ang Lee, was not available for production, which means Yuen Wo Ping will be directing the movie. He was responsible for directing the fight scenes on the first movie.
It is unclear whether this experiment from IMAX and Netflix will be a success. Netflix has enjoyed a lot of critical and commercial success thanks to their original television shows. Programs such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, BoJack Horseman, and Hemlock Grove have been hits with audiences and critics. However, releasing a movie online and in theaters rarely bodes well for box office numbers.
